Jock itch is caused by certain fungi called dermatophytes. These fungi are generally present on the skin of human beings but their growth is kept under control when hygiene is maintained and the skin's surface is kept clean and arid.
However when there is an accumulation of dirt and sweat on the skin, it provides an ideal platform for these fungi to grow and thrive. Areas such as the groin and inner thigh which accumulate sweat easily are quite susceptible to such fungal growth.
The following are some of the ways in which jock itch can be caused
Sharing an infected person's towel, clothes, sheets or blankets can result in the infection spreading from one person to another. Jock itch can also be acquired from having sexual contact with an infected individual.
Wearing close fitting or tight clothes can also cause jock itch due to the trapped sweat and dirt which provide an environment for fungi to thrive and grow.
Fungi can also live on objects and dead skin cells so close contact with objects that are occupied by such fungi could irritate the skin and cause jock itch.
The fungus that causes jock itch also causes athlete's foot infection, so if you do have athlete's foot or a similar fungal infection, the fungi can spread from the area of infection to the groin and cause jock itch.
People with diabetes, AIDS, hepatitis or people who consume drugs and medication that suppress the immune system are also at a risk of developing a jock itch infection.
